HBO's Voyeur ad won the Best of Show at the ONE Show Design awards, 2008.
Category: Environmental Design – Single; art director: David Carter; writers: Greg Hahn, Mike Smith, David Carter; creative directors: David Lubars, Bill Bruce, Greg Hahn, David Carter, Mike Smith, Brian DiLorenzo; client: HBO/Voyeur; agency: BBDO New York / New York.
After attending the ONE Show Design award ceremony in early May, we’re still not sure how the “Design” category differs from the rest of the ONE Show, which gives awards to print, television, and interactive advertising each year. The website seems to claim that the main award is about “great ideas,” while the Design award is about . . . design. (What, design doesn’t have great ideas?)
That said, there was a lot of interesting work from international agencies, including Leo Burnett India, Ogilvy Frankfurt, and Publicis Malaysia. But the Best in Show pencil went to BBDO New York’s Voyeur projection installation for HBO. A brief film projected onto the side of a New York City building to look like a cross-section of life in the apartments, it was both a crowd and judge favorite. Based on a quick and informal poll of the winners, many of the winning entries seemed to have fans:
* Mike Smith from BBDO/New York, when asked about his favorite entry, mentioned the ads for Microsoft XBOX Halo 3, created by McCann Worldgroup SF & T.A.G., saying that they designed “for the emotion, instead of for the thing.”
* Micah Anderson, who worked on the sound for the movie Typophile 4, singled out Andrew Zuckerman’s book Creature as a standout, pointing to the challenging task of working with the animals as professional models: “With the larger animals, you could see the reflection of the umbrella lights in their eyes, so you knew they really had brought them into the studio.”
* Yoshihiro Yagi of Tokyo-based agency Dentsu, and Yo Kimura of Katachi Co., also in Tokyo, enjoyed the HBO piece (“We’ve been talking to those guys about their ideas,” said Yagi); but they were also impressed by an animated spot for Amnesty International wherein the looped lines of a signature are used to create various methods of escape by people in duress.
The full list of winners is available on the ONE Club site.
