Ed Fella, who has retired from his profession as an illustrator and graphic designer, currently teaches in the graduate program at CalArts, where he has worked since 1987. “After 30 years (from 1957 to 1987), I’m finished with professional practice—the next generation now has it well in hand,” he says. “I call myself an ‘exit-level’ designer. I do my own personal form of ‘art-design’ which is basically a deconstruction of the forms and techniques of my past work and experiences as that long ago commercial artist, and which seems to bring me lots of recognition (and awards) in my old age. THE CONCEPT

“The Los Angeles-based Pacifica Radio station has been around since 1959. It’s KPFK, 90.7FM, and it hosts a program, ‘Live From the Left Coast,’ every Sunday morning that I have been a regular listener to for many years. As the station is completely listener-supported, of course, it is always short of money, and holds several yearly fund-drives. So this tote-bag project will be my contribution to the cause. My design has the call letters in a red circle in a rather idiosyncratic mix of swirling letterforms (possibly on the edge of readability), while ‘Live From the Left Coast’ butts up against a ‘coast’ line in a back-slanted, roughly hand-lettered font—which, by the way, is one of my own, and just may be reminiscent of protest posters. The founder of Pacifica, Lewis Hill, was an anti-war dissident, even during WWII!”
