Gel (short for “Good Experience Live”) is an annual conference devoted to business, technology, art, society, and life. Last April, it was held at the Times Center in New York. Among the featured speakers, Bobby J. Martin, Jr., senior design manager for Nokia UK, talked about his branding initiative for the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem (200th anniversary flag, above, behind a familiar face). What began as his 2003 School of Visual Arts MFA Designer as Author thesis project developed into a successful outreach billboard campaign (below) in the community to bring recognition to the oldest African-American church in New York.
