Dateline Italia – Walking through the Mercato di San Lorenzo in sunny Florence, one is apt to find “I Simpson” ephemera. The other day, I came across one of these shirts (above) with the tagline “Oziare Credere” (Loaf, believe)–a take on dictator Benito Mussolini’s slogan “Credere Obbedire Combattere” (believe, obey, fight). Given that the current president of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, is the modern-day Duce, jokes about Mussolini seem to be more common, as well as comparisons to the current leader (see below).
