Print in Motion: Film Titles: Typophile Film Festival 5

Film Titles Winner: Typophile 5 Opening Sequence

For its fifth annual film festival for Typophile, Punchcut’s Joe Pemberton and Jared Benson contacted their former schoolmate Brent Barson, who had created the opening titles for the previous four festivals with the help of the BYU graphic design department. “Since it was the fifth festival, themes involving typography and the number 5 were encouraged,” says Barson. “We came up with the five senses and how they feed our creativity, and it steamrolled from there.”

Competition judge Phil Pinto appreciated the physical labor involved. “All the handmade elements and transitions keep it interesting, and I never knew what was going to happen next,” he says. “ÄúPlus an extra point for the use of Jello. Design needs more Jello.”

In fact, the Jello was the most difficult part of the sequence, says Barson. He added extra gelatin to the molds, but they were still fragile. “The custom vacuum form molds worked wonders, but the gelatinous medium was the weak link in the end,” he says. “By the way, boiling hot, steamy plain gelatin with blue food coloring is the grossest smelling substance in the world. It smells like cattle and death.”
