PRINT‘s Student Cover Competition started in 1964 as a way to provide a showcase for designers about to enter the field. Forty-four years later, our competition is still going strong, as a new group of students take on the challenge of designing a PRINT cover.
For the first time, we are opening the final judging to the public. Our three finalists, show below, were chosen by Miranda Dempster, art director of Art+Auction, Andrew Horton, art director of Business Week, and Lina Kutsovskaya, art director of Teen Vogue. Our judges found that these three covers best exemplified the theme of “Design, Culture, and Youth,” but the choice of the first-prize winner is up to you. The winning design will be featured in our April 2008 issue. Voting ends November 16.
Student: Brandon Maddox
Maddox’s design of a leaky pen’s doodles drew praise from our judges, with Horton saying “I want that shirt.”
Student: Katty Maurey
The humor of Maurey’s piece elicited laughs from the judges, making them wonder if the cover models were twins or merely Photoshop-created doppelgangers.
Student: Blaz Porenta
Porenta created a gatefold that unfolded to create a cresting wave, saying, “I wanted [my cover] to be interactive, yet simple.” His clean design and illustration made his cover design effective open or folded.
