Tucked inside a Zona Tortona courtyard at the Milan Furniture Fair last April, we found Dutch designer Maarten Baptist showing off his Sofia coatstand for the newly-formed label Joine. Now in production through Spinder and making its official debut at next month’s Ambiente fair in Frankfurt, Sofia—designed in collaboration with Daniel Watse—erases transportation from the carbon-footprint equation by sourcing local materials from each country of manufacture; as the designers say, "What is the point of shipping materials all over the globe if you can relocate production just as easily?" In Russia, then, the shaft is made from oak; in Japan, bamboo; and in the Netherlands stainless steel. Don’t mind us, we’ll be over here holding out for the all-chocolate version from Hershey, PA. www.joine.nl
