Quinze’s Rebirth piece before its demolition in Paris June 27, 2008. It was a serious one-night stand. Last Thursday saw the opening – and closure – of another viral wooden installation by Arne Quinze, this time in the five-star Paris Art Deco hotel Le Royal Monceau on Avenue Hoche. In the past, the Monceau has played host to the likes of Hemingway, Disney and DeNiro, but Thursday, as it prepared to close for a year-long renovation at the hands of Philippe Starck, it hosted Quinze’s sculptural collage of wooden 2x4s. The Belgian designer’s signature rough-hewn, chaotic layering of material stood in stark contrast to the hotel’s lush decor and served as the backdrop for the exclusive closing party, which marked the beginning of the hotel’s rebirth, with guests invited to demolish everything in sight.
