It’s that time again, the cold day in winter when a young man’s fancy turns to love (or lust) and the greeting card and flower industries capitalize on the artificial not-so-holy day of St. Valentine. Cherubs and nymphs abound and babies are conceived (or not, as the case may be).
These vintage chromolitho cards tell a Gilded Age Valentine story of courtship, marriage, conception, birth and its aftermath. And thank heavens mama is around. Perhaps the set was sold as a Valentine’s and Mother’s Day combo. They say a lot about the mores of the era, don’t they?
