Being inhabited by colonial Europeans, Shanghai and Hong Kong were centers of commerce and venues for European goods. They were, therefore, also wellsprings of “modern” advertising, blending Chinese and Western styles and forms. These examples of advertising posters for cigarettes, liquor and more by the artist Xie Xing Long showcased the so-called “Calendar Girls” that were so prevalent in adverts from the ’20s and ’30s.
