Stamps of Approval

There is so much graphic design history on these seven envelopes that I get shivers just telling you about them. But first, mail—you remember those things in envelopes, actual letters—was a means of celebrating people, places and things. These envelopes are rubber-stamped commemorations of various things. Unlike first-day covers, which mark the introduction of a postage stamp on a smartly engraved or embossed illustrated envelope, these are more informal testaments. In fact, there are two levels of celebration—the focal point, as in 300 Years of American High Schools, and the commemorative stamp itself, as in Whistler’s Mom.

Look around and graphic design is indeed everywhere.
