In the lead-up to the Great War, which wasn’t so great but it was mightily destructive, the Russian press was at once oblivious and concerned. These three newsprint magazines, present the panoply of engagement. From 1913, before the Russian Czar Nicholas began thinking of fighting with his cousin the Kaiser.

Then in 1914, the Czarist military begins to rattle its sabers. And finally on the cusp of conflagration the most popular weekly pulls the curtain on the horrors that will trigger the October Revolution and the creation of the ill-fated Weimar Republic.
