You can decode a lot of political symbolism from cigarette packages produced in Communist and former Communist countries. Like postage stamps, the former Soviet Union and Peoples’ Republic of China have used cigarette packages to commemorate heroes and heroic events (the Sputnik pack below) and national virtues (the Peony pack celebrates China’s beauty and, a recent promotion stated, is “still going strong after 23 years of service to the general populace of China.”).
Who among us in the United States thinks of a cigarette brand as representing our national pride?
