Teaching right from wrong is one lesson of good citizenship. Learning to trust the police is job one for public relations. I recall this booklet from when I was a kid. The officer on the beat, Officer Joe, would visit our public school, all smiles yet stern when he had to be. We’d learn what to do at crosswalks, and then he’d deputize a lucky few of us. We’d wear white belts and AAA badges. But soon, we who were crossing guards, became full of ourselves. Like in “Lord of the Rings,” the alphas would emerge. Not a pretty sight. So much so, that parents would complain and Officer Joe would return, demote us to civilians again, and start all over with newbies, who after a few weeks followed the same patterns. Atavism triumphed.
