Design is everywhere, and it is not always award-winning, typographically nuanced, sophisticated work. Most of us grew up with the kind of type that Schloss Mfg. Co. of Athens, Ohio, created for “Promoting School Spirit.” Last week I focused on class rings and monograms. These “Felt Novelties” are yet another seminal application of shirt sleeve typography. It might be nostalgia for more innocent times, but it’s also a slice of commercial art history—and even American history. As the Schloss folks say:

“What Old Glory means to the heart of every true American, the colors of the school and its activities mean to the students, an outward symbol of loyalty and patriotism.”
