It was once said, power is in the hands of the person who owns a printing press. Well, if it’s still true, Michael Russem of Kat Ran Press has been doing good things with his power. He has also helped develop a gallery for graphic design, Katherine Small Gallery in Somerville, Mass., to accompany his printed matter or vice versa.
The current show and gem of a booklet is Ivan Chermayeff: Mostly Early Covers, “an opportunity,” notes Russem, “to focus on forty-one of Chermayeff’s less-celebrated designs without being overwhelmed by the iconic work for which he is so well known.” They are indeed worth seeing and having the catalog as a valuable keepsake.
