Weekend Heller: Igarashi’s Frenetic Alphabetics

Takenobu Igarashi monumentalized type and typography when most of us were still living in Gutenberg’s shadow. With his unprecedented 3D type, Igarashi created an even larger shadow that brought the old world together with the future one.

Donors get to select their own customized cover letter.

Announcing through Volume, a crowdfunding platform, and produced in collaboration with Igarashi a new book “A to Z” is the first major publication to present Igarashi’s three-dimensional typographic work in forensic detail. The book embraces a playful approach, mixing landmark designs with previously unseen works, including unused concepts, pen-and-pencil mark-up boards, and the detailed perspective drawings that underpin Igarashi’s aesthetic. The publication is thus both monograph and guide to designers of all disciplines, offering detailed insight into Igarashi’s distinctive design process.

As with all Volume publications, there are several ways to support the project: a landmark edition features a foil-covered case design unique to Volume. Those seeking a true collector’s edition can – only as part of limited-time campaign – choose their own letter for the cover, which will be signed by Igarashi.

A to Z reveals the craft behind Igarashi’s visionary letterforms and illuminates one of the most creative design minds of the last half-century.

Volume was founded by Lucas Dietrich and Darren Wall to offer an alternative publishing model for creating, financing, producing, and selling high-quality illustrated and printed books.
