AIGA RISD graphic system by Dinah Fried and Andrew LeClair (Providence, RI): dinahfried.com and andrewleclair.com
“We had just founded the AIGA RISD student group to organize projects, workshops, and events at the Rhode Island School of Design, and we needed a distinctive yet flexible system for printed matter. As graduate students, our time and budget were limited, so everything had to be quick to lay out and inexpensive to print.
“Our solution was a modular system of letter-size sheets printed on a black-and-white laser printer. Tiled together, these pages can be reconfigured into posters and flyers at a variety of scales; folded or cut in half, they become event programs.
“The system managed to avoid the usual hackneyed imagery of No. 2 pencils, grid lines, and overprinted process colors. Prominent typography draws attention to the typeface choices, which are explained in small captions. Brightly colored paper and tape reveal the divisions between units, while the AIGA and RISD logos sit at the edges, holding the modular system together. By making our design decisions transparent to the viewer, the project is a self-reflexive example of graphic design in action. It shows, not tells.” —Dinah Fried and Andrew LeClair
