An Ad with a Story to Tell

Saul Bass was a master visual storyteller and an inveterate wit, as Jenifer Bass and Pat Kirkham’s wonderful professional biography illuminates. His film titles alone are enough to land him in the proverbial pantheon of design innovators. But Bass was also a master adman. These recently surfaced spot ads for the film Pearl of the South Pacific are sublime design and intelligent concepts rendered in a modern “comics” panel format. It is such an exquisite handling of form and content, I felt it should be resurrected here.

Speaking of admen, the legendary George Lois recently shared some of the secrets of his success—check out his Damn Good Advice (For People with Talent!) over at

Please don’t forget the wonderful Art Goodman who was so important to Saul’s work for so many years. It was a true intellectual and creative partnership and friendship. Art’s wife now teaches here in Pasadena, CA at Art Center College of Design. I hope you write about Art Goodman some day – too – he and his work deserve to be remembered.. Saul was wonderful – so was Art.
