Our Future Prosperity for Half a Penny

Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York, is one brilliant spokesman for America’s future. And that future costs only half a penny of every tax dollar. He believes, and says it in this inspiring video, that the U.S. creative and economic growth was, in the 1960s, inextricably linked to the NASA space program. The race to the Moon fostered a need for development in all strata of science, art and industry. Space literally opened our eyes to new frontiers.

Now, myopia has set in. We are, as a nation, no longer far sighted but have tunnel vision and narrow minds. The space age opened up the heavens and our collective minds. Now, NASA is a shell of what it once was. We are too engaged in regional wars to think of the universe. But NASA’s budget is smaller than the funds used to bailout our financial institutions, which has made the rich get richer. Dr. Tyson argues the investment in space will have an invaluable impact on our future at home. After listening to him, perhaps you’ll agree.
