On August 22, 1972—40 years ago—a desperate, rifle-toting robber, John Wojtowicz, who demanded cash to cover his boyfriend’s sex-change surgery, burst into a Brooklyn bank and held the employees hostage. In the famous summer film, he was played by Al Pacino. But the real stars were the cops who helped Wojtowicz’s hostages escape unharmed on that Dog Day Afternoon.

The dog days of which the film title refers are the hottest of summer, most commonly experienced in late August. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, the closest in proximity to the sun, was responsible for the hot weather. In bittersweet celebration of the dog days that herald the end of the summer of 2012 this weekend, here are some dog logos and mascots.
