Goin' Batty

Ryan Mungia has just started a company called BOYO that sells letterpress items. His first offering is a reproduction of an old advertisement for a cabaret called La Chauve-Souris, or “The Bat.” It originated in Moscow in the early 20th century, eventually making its way to Paris, where it opened in 1920. Mungia’s goal is to make a fine art quality print while staying true to the original, which is really just a cheap leaflet, “so I decided to print it letterpress in order to give it a mass-produced feel,” he told me. The poster is above, as well as an advertisement from 1923 and an illustration of the curtain at La Chauve-Souris which Mungia found in an old issue of Vanity Fair from 1922. The print goes for $100 here.
