Hurricane Graphics: Gimme Shelter

The symbols used to warn you and me about impending dangers are often used on flags. As I sit around waiting for the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy (which seems like such benign name, doesn’t it? Should be Hurricane Osama or something like that), I was reviewing some of the flags used. Storm warnings are displayed by the United States Weather Bureau at 142 stations on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and at 46 stations on the Pacific coast. Red is the dominant color.

Full-blown hurricane is here.
