Sutnar's Venus Paintings

Ladislav Sutnar

Ladislav Sutnar is arguably the forerunner of the information graphics and data visualization upswing in design today. He was also a painter in later life, with the penchant for what he called “Joy Art.” Indeed the colors and themes were joyful. His U.S. Venus series of nudes and semi-nudes fit somewhere into the Pop Art idiom, though he disliked that association. The paintings have long been in the background of his oeuvre, but interest has increased in exhibiting them. The photos here are from the exhibition at U(P)M, Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague curated by┬áIva Knobloch. Here is an essay on Sutnar’s son, Radislav’s, efforts to raise the level of scholarship for this work.

A second exhibition of U.S. Venus will open on October 26 through December at the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery in Pilsen, part of the Institute of Art and Design of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
