Designers take their inspiration from the world around them. And in beautiful, cyclical fashion, their inspired designs go back out into the world. Design feeds design. At Blurb, we believe that inspiration is everywhere. The seed for that next brilliant design project could be in the signboard at the local diner.
At least that’s what designer Megan Boxberger found. She traveled to off-the-beaten-path diners in Kansas to document the vanishing visual vernacular of signboards, analyzing the type choices—and having a few burgers and milkshakes along the way.
She located the subtle variations in type from the stylized font on the restaurant sign, to the clean lines of the jukebox buttons. She found the interplay between the lettering on the snack machine and the scrawls on the order pad. The result is her Blurb book, Foodie Typography.
Tasty Typography: From Diners to Food Trucks
Taking a more mobile route, Emily Austin investigated the fonts of food trucks in Food Truck Typography. From door signs to business cards, she looked at the way two food trucks use typography to sell snow cones and tacos—and establish their brands in the process.
These are just two examples of the wonderful ways designers have used Blurb to explore the world of design around us. We hope you will too. Blurb’s plug-in for Adobe InDesign makes it easy to bring design inspiration into the real world—in the form of beautiful bookstore-quality books.
