The Best Designs of the Year: New York City

As we gear up for Print’s 2015 Regional Design Annual—the 35th anniversary of the competition—we’re bringing you the Best of Region winners from 2014. Last year, for the first time, we asked our judges to select their top design from each of the six regions of the RDA (Far West, Midwest, Southwest, South, East and NYC). We’ll be doing so again in 2015. Don’t miss the chance to have your work spotlighted among the best designs in the country, in our most popular issue of the year.

And the winner for NYC is …

Title: Happy Mother’s Day

Design Firm: Chris Ware/The New Yorker, New York City

Creative Team: Chris Ware (illustrator), Françoise Mouly (art editor)

Client: The New Yorker

A regular contributor to The New Yorker, Chris Ware’s powerful illustrations evoke emotions while addressing current social issues—and his second Mother’s Day cover was no different. Described by judge Debbie Millman as “brilliant and beautiful, as always,” this illustration shifts the social conversation surrounding same-sex marriage, doing so in Ware’s signature style.

“It’s always a pleasure to watch a genius like Ware come up with a simple image on a difficult topic,” says Françoise Mouly, art editor of The New Yorker. “Watch how he subtly uses and subverts gender-specific blue and pink color coding—and how he puts the half-hidden children at the heart of his image.”

As Ware writes on The New Yorker website, “Few people today don’t know—or have in their families—at least one loving couple who are raising children, same-sex or not. And it’s really just the loving part that matters.”
