Time is on Your Side, Yes it Is!

It’s that time again when your mornings are darker than my days. Here are some Daylight Savings Time factoids from our friends at Google:

fall back, spring forward

Did you know that Daylight Saving Time is not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and by most of Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona).

Indiana, which used to be split with a portion of the state observing DST and the other half not, is now whole. In the past, counties in the Eastern Time Zone portion of the state did not observe DST. They were on standard time year round. A state law was passed in 2005 that has the entire state of Indiana observing DST beginning in April 2006.

Indiana isn’t the only state that wanted to change daylight saving time. California asked for federal “approval” to move to a “year-round” Daylight Saving Time in 2001-2002 because of its energy crisis.

At the back of the Daylight Saving scheme, I detect the bony, blue-fingered hand of Puritanism, eager to push people into bed earlier, and get them up earlier, to make them healthy, wealthy, and wise in spite of themselves.Robertson Davies, The Diary of Samuel Marchbanks, 1947

Spring forward or else . . .

The article does not mention the fact that there is a Hopi reservation – fully contained within the Navajo Nation’s land – that does not recognise DST as well. So the Navajos have a “doughnut” of DST up there on the Rez.

It was my understanding that parts of western Kansas did not observe as well.  Is this still the case?  I was out there once and the person told me also said that when it was being introduced, the farmers in the area felt that the ‘extra hour of sunlight’ would burn their crops!
