What the Best Dressed Policeman Was Wearing

The men in blue had to look sharp in neatly tailored uniforms that expressed authority while exuding style. “Each tailoring step is carefully checked and rechecked to insure absolute uniformity. . . ,” which is a good thing when you are manufacturing and selling uniforms. “The transaction is complete only when you are entirely satisfied,” says the brochure (above and below), which is also prudent since they are manufacturing and selling uniforms to the lawmen. But seriously, with only a few exceptions – i.e. today’s more casual styles and synthetic fabrics, and the phasing out of “great coats” – the uniforms of the 1940s are designed much like the uniforms of today.

  1. Loving all the Daily Heller’s lately! My dad was a San Francisco police officer. Starting in the 60s through the 80s. Yes, he was one of those highly tailored cops. He passed away earlier this year. Thanks for bringing back that memory of him – young and sharp, in his perfect uniform.
