By coincidence we have two magazines this week that dispel the rumor
that print magazines are dead. Today a very special though venerable
one, yes, The New Yorker.
The cover of the May 14, 2007 issue is actually three covers. A first,
I believe for this journal, and possibly any other (Flaunt is known for
its double covers, but not three). This one, which on the contents page
is listed as "Cover(s)" by Bruce McCall and titled "The Ascent of Man,"
is a send up of the cliche evolutionary chart. Like so many of McCall's
deadpan graphic comedies it is spot-on perfect in its execution and
concept (a Rube Goldbergian train that takes man to his (and her)
ultimate endgame.
A tip of the hat to Francoise Mouly, cover art director, for this inspiringly innovative keeper of a cover. |
