Every so often a curious document falls into unexpected hands. I received a copy of a letter from Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the famed assisted-suicide doctor, dated April 16, 1964 from Pontiac, Michigan to the director of the former Gallery of Modern Art in New York. I thought it would be interesting to read how this doctor, known for his activism on behalf of suicide, tried to also be an artist with death as his theme. (No copies of the paintings accompanied the letter.)

Dear Sir

I have a series of fourteen paintings which arouse a great deal of interest whenever exhibited. The first few deal with common symptoms, but the theme has gradually shifted to rather deep topics of a social nature. Their impact is immediate and considerable. Ten were exhibited at a local university last fall;since then I have completed four others, the last dealing with genocide. I hope to arrange another exhibit at another nearby university later this spring or summer. My style of painting most closely approaches surrealism, leaning more toward realism, and is considered to be somewhat unique by several experts.

Please let me know your policy regarding exhibits of works of men such as I, living outside of New York and having no established distinction of art. I am a physician and have not desire to sell the paintings. They carry a forceful and lasting message; it is gratifying to observe viewers’ reactions.I f an exhibit might be possible at your gallery, I would gladly loan you a set of Kodacrhome transparencies of the paintings so that you may judge for yourself.

Sincerely yours,

Jack Kevorkian, M.D.

**A hand written note from the director to his assistant reads: “A note please saying sorry schedule all full.”
