There are many ways to describe the Richard Serra exhibit at athe Museum of Modern art on view now through September 10 (in New York) - monumental, imposing, exquisite, incredible, etc. But the only way to truly describe the experience of tons of steel floating in space is to walk through the monumental, imposing, exquisite, incredible exhibition yourself. And for an inspiring interview with Serra listen to Kurt Andersen's Studio 360.

I can't wait to see the Serra show at the MoMA. I think it's interesting that the N ew York Times review describes the exhibit as a "virtually a foregone matter, in the way that Picasso and Matisse shows arrived in the old days. It’s a landmark, by a titan of sculpture, one of the last great modernists in an age of minor talents."

I grew up in Serra's hometown, San Francisco, and in 1994, a Serra sculpture was proposed for the Palace of the Legion of Honor, and Herb Caen, the San Francisco Chronicle columnist, hated the idea. It's hard to explain the position that Herb Caen had in San Francisco--he was kind of like Cindy Adams or Page Six here in New York, but even more popular. If you read the paper, you read Herb Caen.

Caen hated Serra's proposed work, and wrote about its ugliness every day (this is from when I was in high school, so maybe my memory is wrong and it wasn't EVERY day, but it sure felt like it). I didn't know if I agreed with Caen, but I think in a weird way, those columns poisoned me. For a long time, when I thought about Serra, I thought, "ewww." When I finally saw a Serra show, in Bilbao, I was amazed by the sculptures, and I realized how much I had been influenced by Caen's complaining. Caen made it difficult for me to judge Serra's work on my own.
