That would be Paul Poiret the French fashion designer, who radically removed corsets from stylish women's wear, and whose gowns and dresses, worn mostly by his wife and muse, are sculptures and paintings sewn together and worn with regal splendor. But I wax too poetically.
In fact, the current Poiret : King of Fashion exhibition at the MET in NY is one of the most beautiful installations I have seen in years. Replete with stunning backdrops reminicent of bygone days and contemporary computer video animations, the show is a feast for the eyes. But again I wax. . .
Poiret influenced one of my favorite French cartoonists, Paul Iribe, who was also known for his fashion plates, some of which hang in this exhibit. Which, as I've already waxed, is the treat of the Summer.
