Have you heard about the new sport: Competitive Influences? No? Well,
check out Grafik 150 (the sequel to Grafik 100), Grafik magazine's anniversary special brick of a volume of
personal influences from more than 150 designers, design-lovers, and
design pundits (that's me), from Stefan Sagmeister to Peter Saville
(and that's only the S category). But seriously, this is a delightful
compilation of some arcane and revealing inspirations, beautifuly
designed and smartly annotated.
Mine was W.A. Dwiggins' Reform of the Currency, a cleverly yet insightfully written and
handsomely designed mini-masterpiece wherein DWIG, as he was known,
invents currency for Antipodes, a fantasy island off the coast of his rich
imagination. And if I do say so, it was the best influence of all of them. But see for yourself.
