The annual Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) convention was held
this weekend at the fabled Puck Building (where the final years of Puck
magazine were published at the turn of the century). On hand were
all the comic masters from the Underground and post-Underground era -
Art Spiegelman, Gary Panter, Charles Burns, Drew Friedman, David
Sandlin (and those were just the ones I ran into). It was good to see
Friedman because his most recent book "Old Jewish Comedians," has one
of my favorite bits of trivia - Sid Ceasar's real full name. However,
Drew confided he was wrong. According to an indignant Mr. Ceasar's
press aide, his name was originally Sidney Ceasar. Hmmmm.
Also in attendance, Dan Nadel was manning his Picture Box table,
featuring a slew of his recently published comics and monographs
(Picture Box is an imprint to watch).
All told, it was quite an event amazing for how much excellent comics
publishing there is these days since the floodgates were opened when
Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly expanded the field from "underground"
art to literary art movement with RAW magazine.
