What caught my eye in a recent press release was the title "The Art of Revolution, " a 1970 book by Dugald Stermer, introduced by Susan Sontag, about the (then) brilliant Cuban posters that had only recently been revealled to Americans. As many already know the Cuban poster, which has since been celebrated in books and exhibits, was creatively akin to the early Soviet posters produced by Constructivists and Productivists just after the Bolshevik Revolution.

This new exhibition with work by the Dutch design collective Experimental Jetset is, according to the press release, insprired by Stermer's book and Sontag's essay. "This show investigates ways in which reproduction can be revolutionary on a personal, aesthetic and social level." Its curator, Gerry Beegan, notes that the original essay by Sontag "was highly critical of the book itself, arguing that the posters had been drained of their subversive potential through their collection and reproduction in a commercial context." So, the work in the show is Experimental Jetset's response to the contraditions.

Sadly, the release only reached me yesterday, but the show had been up since August. So I suggest we all go see "The Art of Revolution"  featuring the work of Experimental Jetset and the words of Susan Sontag at Fordham University. The show continues until October 5 with a closing reception on Thursday October 4, from 6 to 8. The gallery is in Manhattan near the Lincoln Center.
