Call me old (or old fashioned), but at this moment in time I have successfully refused to open a Facebook profile. Well, actually, I signed up, but then did not "confirm," so somewhere I'm listed but without any relevant profile information.
Still, I'm worried that now I don't have any friends. I keep hearing from others how many friends they have, and I'm jealous.
This morning I heard that one of the most conservative folks/institutions I know has a Facebook page because they figured out that "Friend" has turned into a verb. Not to be left out of the linguistic sea change, this former conservative has decided to join the Facebook herd and to be "Fanned" as well.
Did you know that "To Fan" (which has nothing to do with circulating air) now is an Internet verb too?

I wish I could have stayed out of the melee myself, but unfortunately, my clients are the ones asking for the latest Facebook widget and application ideas. That kinda forces me into digging deeply and interacting as much as possible. So, instead of stepping out at 5pm each night, my phone is connected to Facebook, LinkedIn, Basecamp, Twitter, Netvibes, ad naseum. Some days I feel like I'm being a responsible interactive director, some days I'm proud to have friends and fans and such. Other days, I wish I lived in Big Sky country and was able to fly fish and write for the local Helena paper...
In other words, I feel your pain. |
