When is it appropriate to "recycle" artwork from other artists, times, and places?
This is the big elephant in the studio of many designers and illustrators.
In Suggested "Best Practices" for Using the Graphic Artwork of Others Lincoln Cushing suggests that appropriation is "cultural imperialism." Yet he does offer five handy rules of thumb for appropriate methods of historical appropriation.

| I don't think recycling is ever appropriate. You can be influenced by another's work, but it should obviously take you in a new or alternative direction. Simply changing the type of an existing layout is not an homage to original designer, it's stealing their ideas for your own benefit. |

| I agree with ketch22. Getting inspiration from other designs is great, but a designer should be creative enough (and considerate enough for that matter) to come up with a completely original/unique design all their own. |
