Horsepower:
An exhibition by students from the School of Visual Arts in New York City
February 2 through March 2, 2008
Curated by Kevin O'Callaghan
Imagine a world without oil as a source of power! Well before the
20th century the world depended on another source of power—the horse.
In fact the avenues of New York and the streets of Main Street America
were crowded with horse drawn vehicles.
Given this rich history, students of the School of Visual Arts have
learned from the past and have imagined today's world without oil.
As a point of departure, students have taken horse drawn vehicles of
yesterday and have reinvented them to take on the task of today's
energy challenged world. Carriages, sleighs, etc., are being created in
a "satirical" manner in hope of showing what we could learn from our
past.
School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City is an established leader
and innovator in the education of artists. From its inception in 1947,
the faculty has been comprised of professionals working in the arts and
art-related fields. SVA provides an environment that nurtures
creativity, inventiveness and experimentation, enabling students to
develop a strong sense of identity and a clear direction of purpose.
