A good student designer has to be thoughtful, diligent, and intelligent. Then the formal issues come together. Typography is the lingua franca, so fluency is necessary. But for me, the mostimportant thing is being able to conceive ideas in such a way that there's clarity, interest and, yes, even entertainment value. All of that said sometimes portfolios may have great formal work, that looks terrific, but it's not the be all and end all. It is the thought process that you don't necessarily get right away from a portfolio.
