First the currency, then "Mission Accomplished," now the U.S. Passport
has been redesigned - if designed is the right word. Maybe junked up
with a melange of photoshop cliches is better. Some things are best
left alone. But see for yourself.
When asked who was responsible, Agent #007 of the National Passport
Information Center (really 007 no joke!)
offered this: "I am sorry but we do not have that information available nor can we acquire that information."

| This is a classic example of kitchen sink design-by-bureaucracy. The thinking behind it was, if one patriotic image is good, then ten must be better—same with the typefaces. Take the data and signature pages, where clarity is demanded the most. Here you have clunky illustrations of the bald eagle, waves of grain, and stars-and-stripes, together with the national seal, the Constitution’s preamble in calligraphic script, and text set in about four different typefaces. Previously, only one image appeared opposite the passport photo—a very classic, scaled-back engraving of the eagle. Now, your eye really doesn’t know where to land, and the legibility of the critical data is compromised. Does our government really want that? |
