If you want to know what, in fact, the royal they were thinking here's an excerpt from bbc.co.uk "606" comment and debate site:

The jagged emblem, based on the date 2012, comes in a series of shades of pink, blue, green and orange and will evolve in the run-up to the Games.

"This is the vision at the very heart of our brand," said London 2012 organising committee chairman Seb Coe.

"It will define the venues we build and the Games we hold and act as a reminder of our promise to use the Olympic spirit to inspire everyone and reach out to young people around the world.

"It is an invitation to take part and be involved. "

Universally panned, the jagged logo looks like a reject from a Colorforms market test. It is not only illegible, but unmanageable too. And who chose the typeface?

The BBC is weighing in, calling it the "Oh no" logo.

And let's not forget the choice phrase from the Telegraph yesterday:
"A puerile mess and a commercial scandal."

Does anyone like it?

As if it couldn't get any worse: Now the logo is apparently causing epileptic seizures. Does anyone have footage of this? (the animation, not the seizures) The video on the London 2012 website doesn't seem to be working.

There's an online petition to have the logo changed. 20,000 signatures so far ...

BBC aired some alternative designs, sent in by viewers.

I think it's instantly identifiable. I think it's fasterlouder. I think it's futuristic. I think it's bold and ambitious.
