NYCIn thinking about New York—the only city that stands as its own region in the RDA—judge Louise Fili told us that what makes the Big Apple unique is that “it is a city of design perfectionists.”

That pulse runs strong in all of the regions this year, and beats fiercely in this one. For Fili, the work featured here is a collection that spoke to her. “I was looking for something beautiful and fresh—something that I wish I had done,” she says. “It was refreshing to come across a thoughtful
piece created by hand.”

To that end, Fili has never been afraid to wield her own instruments to create unique work. She self-taught herself calligraphy after ordering an Osmiroid pen that she saw advertised in the back of The New Yorker when she was 16 years old. Her work is often applauded for her elegant and flawless use of typography that oozes with flair and craftsmanship at every ligature.

Her favorite part of judging this year’s RDA? Seeing the abundance of new work streaming from New York City. It proves, once again, that New York, the city of design perfectionists, still holds its own.
