New York City Regional Design Awards

A circle or star is often drawn on a map, noting New York City as an epicenter of great design. Some years, it holds up strikingly well to that reputation in the RDA. In others, the pool of entries falls somewhat flat for the judge in a few areas.

For Sagmeister & Walsh partner Jessica Walsh, New York City rose to the occasion in the arena of corporate and client-based work, but was a bit short on the amount of self-initiated projects in the mix. That’s not surprising, considering Walsh’s own affinity and recognition for such personal projects. “I’d love to see more work from up-and-coming and individual designers—not just larger studios,” Walsh says.

Nonetheless, she lauds “smart ideas and good formal execution. Styles that feel fresh and interesting. Work that makes me feel some emotion or think about things differently. … There was a lot of colorful work in the mix, which was fun to see coming from New York.”

Her favorite part about judging this year’s RDA? Immersing herself in the larger pool of contemporary design. The prolifically busy designer admits she has less and less time to keep track of what’s going on in the scene these days. “Judging the RDA was the perfect opportunity to have an overview,” Walsh says.

“2015 was the year that enamel pins really exploded as a trend, and so while I had produced some in the past as one of many takes on souvenir items, I dove in head-first. I explored designs that take illustration off the page, make feelings tangible and let people literally wear their heart on their sleeve.”
