Regional Design Awards – South

There’s more to the South than its plump peaches, sweet tea and pulled pork. The region has much to offer in the way of the arts, and remains a force to be reckoned with when it comes to its graphic design scene. Judge Bill Grant couldn’t be more proud of the powerful work he witnessed in this year’s RDA. “I have always been on a mission to increase awareness of the level of design being done in the South. These designers prove me right, yet again,” says Grant, who was the first AIGA national president hailing from outside of New York City and San Francisco.

The high caliber of work wasn’t just reserved for the South’s biggest design hubs, though. “It was refreshing to see some great work coming from smaller cities and unexpected areas of the region,” Grant says.

What really caught his eye was the bevy of clean and naturally inspired designs as well as the amount of illustration and hand-rendered touches, such as his Best of Region pick, Lowcountry Field Feast Invitation. “I think this is reflective of the maker movement in general,” he says. “It’s nice to see designers ‘making’ strategic solutions that also reflect craft.”

After a detailed and systematic judging process, Grant is certain that this year’s winners truly represent Southern design at its best.
