PUM LEFEBURE, New York City region judge

The best trend is no trend, says Pum Lefebure, Design Army co-founder and chief creative officer. Design Army is no stranger to kicking ass and taking names when it comes to design competitions (just see the East region of this year’s RDA), which made Lefebure’s role as the New York City judge especially interesting: She knows what it takes to win, and wasn’t going to settle for anything less than a wow.

“At the end of the day, I’m looking for the work that’s created by designers who are unafraid to try new things; I’m a believer in being fearless,” Lefebure says. “Whatever is ‘cool’ today won’t be relevant six months from now, so we have to consciously stay ahead of the trends instead of following them.”

Being different for the sake of being different also isn’t enough for Lefebure, as a good design should also please the eye and stimulate the mind, which is why she always takes a second pass when judging. “I think the best entries must go even further to prove they have uniqueness and depth. It’s not just about creating a beautiful aesthetic—these designs also should provide an emotional experience for the viewer, making you ask questions and creating lasting impact.”
