Southwest Regional Design Awards

JESSICA HISCHE, Southwest region judge

“Solid.” That’s how lettering artist and author Jessica Hische describes the Southwest’s RDA haul this year. And it turns out she’s not only meticulous about her jaw-dropping lettering work, but her judging process as well. “I ended up having to devise an elaborate spreadsheet system to score everything and narrow the winners down,” she says.

This also entailed evaluating everything with Print’s core criteria in mind: How well does the entry communicate? How well does it accomplish the client’s mission? How memorable is it? Is it aesthetically beautiful? Interestingly, Hische notes that while most projects scored favorably in the first two categories, they started to come apart in the latter two, which made the winning projects clear. “The ‘memorable’ category probably determined the winners the most—I believe that in order for a project to be deserving of an award, it has to stick with you and be memorable. It has to stand out from similar projects,” Hische says.

As you make your way through these selections, you may notice several trends at play designwise. But as Hische observes, the dental industry must be thriving in the Southwest, as several beautifully branded offices came across her desk. Now that’s something to smile about.
