But what makes a neighborhood, a community, or a nonprofit more resilient?,” says Rachel Crawford, director. “This year, desigNYC is focused on selecting design and architectural projects that will boost resiliency in all corners of New York life, whether that means helping a nonprofit plan how to rethink and rebuild, or engage and communicate more effectively with their community. We are particularly interested in providing up-front pro bono design services that will help maximize and extend implementation funding being received by organizations in all boroughs. Our city relies on the resiliency of the nonprofits that are on the ground working with New Yorkers, and desigNYC wants to help ensure their ongoing success.”

Stamps of Approval, So To Speak . . .

Since 1920 the American Institute of Graphic Arts has been awarding its AIGA Medals “to individuals who have set standards of excellence over a lifetime of work or have made individual contributions to innovation within the practice of design.” To date, 155 designers have been awarded Medals; only a handful have designed government-issued postage stamps. Kat Ran Press and Michael Russem has just published Postage Stamps by AIGA Medalists, including Josef Albers, Saul Bass, Lucian Bernhard (albeit an “advertising stamp” in Germany), Thomas Cleland (Christmas Seals), Bradbury Thompson, April Greiman, Armin Hofmann and many more. You should not miss this tribute. Learn more here.

Virtual Book Fair Offers Fair Prices

Last October in New York, Designers & Books launched the Designers & Books Fair—a weekend-long celebration of the design book community. It closed early with Hurricane Sandy in close pursuit. Still, the popularity of the “offline” fair suggested the idea for an online Fair.

bilboard_newDesigners & Books’ new online fair is offering 400 books about design from 13 publishers. In addition to providing a completely new type of browse and buy experience, some of the books at the Fair are being offered at discounts of up to 50% off their retail price.

The Designers & Books Online Book Fair combines the serendipity and spontaneity of  browsing in a bookstore with the refined search, sort, and filter capabilities of the Internet. The combination provides a helpful, enjoyable, and well-designed way to discover design books on the Web.
