“Our intern Lee Cerre was in charge of breaking pencils and taking the photograph. I don’t think she took much pleasure in breaking the pencils, to tell you the truth. We like pencils! Arranging the splinters just right took some time. We used Irving Penn’s famous still lifes of cigarette butts for inspiration, since we were trying to take something humble and discarded and make it seem monumental. As it turns out, using Irving Penn as a model is more deflating than inspiring. He is a genius, and everything he did is a lot harder than it looks.” —Michael Bierut

If you haven’t picked up a copy of the 2012 Annual yet, both the print and digital versions will be 25 percent off tomorrow, December 1, as part of a series of pre-holiday sales at MyDesignShop.com.
