13 Graphic Designers Who Created Picture Books
Drawing is a skill that can be developed with practice. In the online course Intro to Drawing, you’ll learn techniques for drawing what you see using a correct technique. Studies in contour drawing, perspective, positive/negative space and value will help you build a foundation. The best picture books do what great graphic design does: share a story that stays. Built with the tools of layout, typography, color, contrast, shape, and line, picture books can guide attention, exp

Illustration History Gets the Care and Attention It Deserves
Ten years ago, Rick Poynor pointed out in Print that “One thing illustration has always lacked, compared to graphic design, is a strong critical framework by which to assess it.” He went on to note that, “Apart from Steven Heller … one would be hard pressed to name a single highly active writer, an expert, primarily identified with illustration as a subject.” Well, all that’s about to change, in a major way. Enter the Douglas B. Dowd Modern Graphic History Library. Mac Conner

The Case of the Dummy Nose
Seymour Chwast published The Nose, a thematic self-promotional publication, from 1997–2009. I was editor for around a dozen of the issues, though it was entirely Chwast’s concept, artwork and wit that made The Nose run (I merely contributed pithy and pun-filled editorials). Like the Push Pin Almanac, Push Pin Graphic and Push Pin Monthly before it, the themes were both serious and comedic—sometimes both at once. In the satiric tradition, Chwast used art and commentary to addr

Here, for your reading and visual pleasure, we present PRINT’s annual list of design books released over the past year, as collected by PRINT Editor-in-Chief Zachary Petit. Picturing Famous Comics Artists and Animators, at Ease
By: Michael Dooley Photographer Greg Preston is a good-natured, low-key guy. There’s an ease about him that enhances his subjects’ comfort amidst their already-familiar surroundings. It’s visible enough in The Artist Within, a handsome, generously-sized hardcover from 2007 with roughly a hundred “portraits of cartoonists, comic book artists, animators, and others,” as the book’s subtitle has it. He’s captured a broad spectrum of extraordinary talents, from Al Hirschfeld, Jule

Chwast’s Saintly Art
Finding a great designer or illustrator’s old work (or young work, depending on how you define it) is like looking at vintage snapshots. Seymour Chwast’s colored pencil drawing for Nikos Kazantzakis’ Saint Francis from 1962 is an elegant depiction of the patron saint of Italy and animals. Contemporary yet classic. Typography & Lettering Awards – Now Open! All too often, typography gets overlooked in larger design competitions—which is why we developed one that gives the artfo

War! What Is It Good For?: Antiwar Images of the 20th Century
Recently Seymour Chwast launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund his illustrated book, War on War: An Illustrated Timeline of 5000 Years of Conquests, Invasions, and Terrorist Attacks, a publication showcasing the culmination of his six-decades-long obsession with man’s 5,000 year history of self-destruction. Examples of Chwast’s conflict-related work go back as far as 1958, to the Push Pin Graphic no. 16, entitled “Peace and War.” Other items in the Push Pin Graphi

18 Illustrated Quotes by Seymour Chwast
A living legend, Seymour Chwast is one of the founding members of the iconic Push Pin Studios in 1954, along with Milton Glaser and Edward Sorel. His revolutionary design work from the 1960s and ’70s redefined the world of art and design, and his illustrated quotes have graced the pages—and webpages—of PRINT for many years. These days, Chwast has been hard at work on a new book, At War with War, currently being funded on Kickstarter. The book will feature an array of insights

Seymour Chwast At War With War
It is far from true that nobody likes war. Sorry to say, there are many who get a rush from the danger of this savage, extremely dangerous sport. Not Seymour Chwast. And he can prove it through posters, books, illustrations and magazines that petition the saber rattlers and missile launchers whenever possible. Maybe his efforts are to no avail. Stopping war is harder than starting it. But Chwast’s work is nonetheless a reminder that triggers emotions and, hopefully, one of th

Beyond the Graphic Novel: Is She Available?
You don’t need Seymour Chwast, Chip Kidd and other designers to tell you that cartoons and comics are vital sources of creative inspiration (although they do that here). So maybe you’re thinking about exploring the graphic novel realm, but you’d like something more exceptional than usual, more out of the ordinary. Well, here’s the first of a series of suggestions that either defy or disregard categorization as comics. And the first, Is She Available?, is an eBook that also ch

The Push Pin Pantheon
The following sampling from a series of 63 portraits of Push Pin Studios’ “Luminaries” is a project by Stephen Alcorn, son of designer, illustrator and early Push Pin member John Alcorn (1935–1992). John passed away too early, but bequeathed to Stephen a talent and passion for drawing. These drawings of Push Pin’s founders (below from top) Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast, and early members, Ed Sorel, Reynold Ruffins and John Alcorn, represent a pantheon of designer/illustrat

All Chwast, All the Time
Seymour Chwast, co-founder of Push Pin Studios, has been honored, celebrated and documented, but this week his definitive online archive is finally available to design historians, critics, students, groupies, professionals, professional groupies and, in fact, just about everyone with access to the internet. Go here for the Seymour Chwast Archive, which features hundreds of known, lesser-known and unknown published work. If the Dante’s Inferno poster (below) is familiar, it’s

Ludwig Hohlwein, Master Designer
While rummaging through the studio bookshelves, I met an old friend: Ludwig Hohlwein, a collection of the poster designs by the artist published in Berlin in 1926. Just seeing the binding made me realize how much Hohlwein’s work affected my interest in graphic design and vintage advertising. I picked the book up from Irving Oaklander, the rare bookseller who passed away in 2012. It’s one of the most lusciously illustrated volumes you’ll ever see, mainly because Hohlwein’s wor

Elwood Smith: From Famous Artists School to Becoming a (Real) Famous Artist
Do you remember the Famous Artists School ads on matchbook covers and in the back of magazines like Life and Look and The Saturday Evening Post? If you’re over a certain age and your scribbles and paint dabs had been selected to be on school bulletin boards since kindergarten, you might have been intrigued, as was I, by headlines such as this: “A Fascinating… Money-Making Art Career Can Be Yours,” “Test Your Art Talent,” “If You Can Draw This…” If you could draw the dog or th

Artists as Art
Seymour Chwast’s perpetually fertile imagination is still going full bore with his series “The Artists: Postcard Portraits of Nineteenth & Twentieth Century Masters.” His “imaginings” of what the maestros look like wrapped in their own art brands are not simply charmingly witty, they represent Chwast’s fluid mastery of style, form and content. This suite is truly sweet (in the vernacular of youth). (They can be purchased by writing seymour@pushpininc.com.) I also asked Chwast
