Citizenship, Now More Than Ever
Inspired by Charles and Ray Eames’ film “Power of Ten,” a new book by Inventory Press, Dimensions of Citizenship: Architecture and Belonging from Body to Cosmos edited by Nick Axel, Nikolaus Hirsch, Ann Lui and Mimi Zeiger, design by IN-FO.CO provides a view of belonging across seven stages starting with the individual (Citizen), then the collective (Civic, Region, Nation), and expanding to include all phases of contemporary society, real and projected (Globe, Network, Cosmos

Federico Babina Merges Architecture + Animals
Special Advertising Note: The following sponsored content is provided by one of Print’s partners, Blurb. Barcelona has some of the most extraordinary architecture of any city in the world: stark modernism, gooey Gaudies, and futurist dreams. So how do you present that architecture in an entirely new and imaginative way? Illustrator and graphic designer Federico Babina found an answer by juxtaposing the man-made with the animal world. Happy Birthday To The Cathedral Of Commerce!
As many people do, I’ve often found it necessary to have things framed for display at home and in our studio—a relatively simple process that had always had a satisfying result. One “gallery” I used to take my stuff to also specialized in selling vintage prints of all kinds that they would beautifully frame and offer for sale. Unfortunately, one particular visit revealed the circumstances surrounding some of the framed pieces they chose to sell. Regardless of how lovely a 193

Skylines to Scale: Yoni Alter Talks Shapes of Cities
A skyline can be the most easily recognizable visual characteristic of a city, though this is typically the result of a handful of architectural icons that accent, if not dominate, the respective cluster of structures: The Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower, Burj Khalifa, to name but a few. But no matter the city, it is next to impossible for a skyline to be understood in terms of how all the components compare to one another. A skyline is a whole, but that whole makes it ve

The Futurist Post Office
With post offices like this, who needs email? My friend Michele Angelini over at Italian Ways has made the kind of archeological design discovery that comes close to matching Heinrich Schliemann’s excavation of the historical Troy. Only this is neither buried nor ruined. One can walk right into The Palace of the Post Office in La Spezia, Liguria, and touch the mosaics. It is a futuristic celebration of modernity yet also a relic of the fascist era. The building was designed b

Roma Ieri ed Oggi (Yesterday and Today)
I’ve walked by this museum building in Rome, between Campo Fiore and Piazza Navona, a hundred times but only the other day did I realize it was the site of the mammoth “Si Si Si” billboard, showing Mussolini with a “Klingon” head. It was a former Fascist party headquarters. There is something decidedly eerie about walking in the footsteps of history. Of course, Rome today is an overlay on the past and ghosts abound. But there are so many remnants of Mussolini’s brief but horr

In CUBE We Trust
A year ago three students, Manuel Krings, Marc Pfaff, Andreas Unteidig, from the Köln International School of Design, sought to test (presumably with tongue in cheek) the design viability of a shiny black cube. They asked product, graphic and architectural designers to critically assess the cube to ascertain how serious or not the “critics” would be when faced with whether to explain or explain-away the object. The sessions with Stefan Sagmeister, Dieter Rams, Marco Piva, Mas

Nauseous Just Looking at It
“Sky Park” Marina Bay Sands Singapore, opened on June 24 a new wonder of the world. It is located on the three 200-meter high skyscrapers, as if on three pillars. Here are the most expensive casinos, bars, restaurants, the largest outdoor swimming pool in the world. Read this from the Daily Mail: If you fancy a dip in this pool, you’ll need a head for heights – it’s 55 storeys up. But swimming to the edge won’t be quite as risky as it looks. While the water in the infinity

Etienne Louis Boullée – Architect of Big
Newton Memorial They don’t make ’em like Etienne Louis Boullée envisioned ’em. Although monumental buildings exist, the cost of creating buildings and monuments as large as Boullée’s is both prohibitive and obscene. Still, his mammoth ego structures are fascinating to view in paper form, and even interesting to contemplate. This is architecture that smothers the masses. Frank Lego Wright, Architect
Lego has long lead the way in plastic brick products. The expandability of the products are brilliant. The numerous themes and tie-ins are endless. My faves are “City,” a collection of urban professionals going about their business (like you and me), and “fishing Boat,” a high tech plastic sea faring craft (fish excluded). Now Lego has released its new progressive architecture line, including the Guggenheim Musuem and Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright, Farnsworth House by L
